Collective Giving at Unity Summit

Collective giving groups have a long history in marginalized communities around the world. The insights that these forms of grassroots philanthropy have for the philanthropic sector are endless, and in many ways are more radical than where philanthropy has been moving.

Research conducted in 2023 in partnership with the Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Philanthropy Together has shown how the movement is growing, the diversity of membership, and how collective giving groups have disrupted the status quo of traditional grantmaking. It builds on doctoral research conducted by Dr. Adriana Loson-Ceballos of Colmena-Consulting in partnership with the Latino Community Foundation’s Latino Giving Circle Network, which found that Latinx giving circles: increase members’ level of civic engagement; change the way members practice philanthropy; and, positively impact their sense of wellbeing and community.

At Unity Summit, we’ll explore these findings and show why philanthropy should invest its resources in support of community-driven and community-funded initiatives and organizations.

With 20 active giving circles across the state of California, the Latino Giving Circle Network at the Latino Community Foundation is helping to lead the charge on shifting the philanthropy sector. In October 2021, the Latino Community Foundation completed its groundbreaking assessment, led by researcher Adriana Loson-Ceballos, with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Center for Effective Philanthropy to explore the impact of giving circles. During this 2022 We Give Summit session, you’ll hear from members of the Latino Giving Circle Network as they explore results from the evaluation and share their personal experiences leading civic change as part of this people-powered movement.

In this recorded session from Philanthropy Together’s We Give Summit, lead researchers Michael Layton and Adriana Loson-Ceballos share preliminary findings from the 2023 study and highlight some of the shifts we’ve seen in collective giving since the previous landscape study.
