Collective giving groups have a long history in marginalized communities around the world. The insights that these forms of grassroots philanthropy have for the philanthropic sector are endless, and in many ways are more radical than where philanthropy has been moving. Research shows that collective giving has huge potential in driving resources to community-led solutions and strengthening our democracy at the local level.
At the CMF 51st Annual Conference, we experienced being part of a giving circle and engaged in a shared learning experience where we collectively decided where to donate, while deepening our understanding of new research showing the impact of participation in a collective giving group on its members in their level of civic engagement, the embrace of trust-based philanthropy values and overall personal wellness.
